Exterior Description And Setting

A gabled three-storey building of snecked basalt in rough courses. Symmetrical entrance facade contains a wide segmental arched doorway to the ground floor; two rectangular openings to the first floor, one open but barred, the other with a ledged timber door. A carved heraldic panel and datestone is fixed between the first floor openings. Segmental arched window, now unglazed, to second floor. Extending to left-hand side of entrance front is a segmental arched opening giving access to a long deep stone vaulted chamber. Main side of building is three-storeys, five windows wide, all derelict; openings have flat arched heads. South side of one storey only, due to slope up of ground: comprises a central segmental arched entrance with ledged timber doors now damaged and altered, flanked by rectangular openings to each side spanned by flat arches; corrugated asbestos roof. Setting: the building stands in the grounds of Red Hall facing onto one of the driveways. It is surrounded by trees, set into a former quarry, with a ramped approach up to its south side.

Built in 1835 by David Kerr to house threshing machinery, with arched straw house of stone attached. Appears on OS map of 1858. It stands in the area of a scheduled monument, no. ANT47:4. This is a sizeable building of local interest as a prominent element on an historic estate of which precise particulars regarding date and patron are recorded. It has unfortunitely lost many of its original architectural features.
