Exterior Description And Setting

Small, plain two storey house, formerly the gate lodge to Mountpleasant House set next to the former entrance to the house on the N side of Scrabo Road. The building is ‘L’ shaped with rough cast render, gabled roofs and plain surrounds to window openings. The front facade faces NE. To the left of this facade is a two storey gabled projection, which in itself projects from a slightly larger gable. On the NW facade of this projection is the panelled entrance door. On the NE (gable) face is a small window to the ground floor, with modern timber frame and a larger window to the first floor with sash frame with horizontal glazing bars. Above this window, to the gable apex, is a small roundel with date ‘A.D. 1846’. To the right of the gabled projection (on the main font facade) is a square window to the ground floor with modern casement frame, and a sash window to the first floor, similar to sash window on projection. The NW facing gable is blank but has a small boiler house lean to projection to the left on the ground floor. To the left on the SE facade is a window to the ground floor and one to the first floor, both of which correspond to the ground and first floor window on the right of the front facade. To the right on the rear facade is a gable which projects slightly. To the first floor of the gable window as first floor front with a smaller modern window to the ground floor. The roofs are covered with Bangor blue slates. Slight overhang at main eaves. Single rendered chimney stack. Cast iron rw goods. Gate screen to S of house in Scrabo stone with concave quadrant walls, simple pillars and late Victorian looking wrought iron gates.

Historical Information

As the roundel suggests this gate lodge was built in 1846, probably by William Mayne who acquired Mount Pleasant in 1842. It is shown on the 1858-60 OS Map though at this stage it appears to have been rectangular in plan. 'The gate lodges of Ulster' states that the building was originally single storey had an upper level added at some point (?c.1870s).
