Exterior Description And Setting

A single-storey mausoleum in Tudor Revival style built into one corner of the chancel of a ruined church. Front faces west: built of dressed sandstone comprising three Tudor arched recessed panels, with octagonal clasping piers to the extremities; piers have moulded crenellations to top. Left-hand panel inscribed ‘Smiley’; central panel is a doorway closed by a sheet iron door; right-hand panel bears dedicatory inscription to Horsborough family. North side of mausoleum is of basalt rubble roughly lime plastered. Rear and south side formed by walls of church. Roof overgrown. Setting: the mausoleum is situated within the walls of a ruined church dating from the 17th century at least, situated within Templecorran graveyard, in a rural area on the southern edge of the village.

Historical Information

Built by John Horsborough in memory of his mother Agnes who died in 1787 and also his brother Alexander who died in 1821. Precise year of building not recorded but dates from 1820s or early to mid-1830s as it also contains John Horsborough himself, who died in 1837. The memorial is sited within the area of an ancient monument, no ANT 47:10. References - Primary Sources 1. Architecturally this early 19th century mausoleum is a good example and well developed example of the Tudor Revival style but is of insufficient historic importance to merit listing.
