Exterior Description And Setting

Single storey rubble built house of c.1750, somewhat altered in recent times. This house is set on a hill top, at the end of a long lane to the N of the Woburn Road, c.2 miles S of Millisle. Front W facade has a left of centre flat roofed porch. Sheeted timber door, with small glazed panel, to the W facade of porch and small timber window to S facade. To the left of the porch is a set of recently installed French doors. To the right of the porch is a tiny fixed light timber window, with a sash window to the far right. Above the porch is a large modern (almost flat roofed) dormer with modern timber windows. Velux window to the left of dormer. The S gable has a modern timber window to the ground floor, set within a fairly recently enlarged (or new) opening. Modern timber window to first floor, whose opening may also have been altered at come point. To the rear are four modern timber windows, the first, second and fourth set in large [?enlarged] openings, with the (smaller) third window a former doorway. Dormer window to upper level of rear, much as front only smaller. Two Velux windows to right of dormer. The N gable has a small single storey flat roofed extension, with two modern windows. Small sash window to upper level of gable. The facade is unrendered and whitewashed. The roof is pitched with asbestos slates. Two whitewashed brick chimney stacks. Cast iron rw goods. Modern flat roofed garages next to NW corner of house.

Historical Information

The present owner believes this house dates from c.1750, but that there was habitation on this general site for some considerable time prior to the 1700s. The house is shown on the Dunbar estate map of 1797, in the then possession of a William Whitley, and on the OS Maps of 1833/4 and 1858-60. The dormers, Veluxes, porch and gable extension are all recent additions and some of the windows appear to have enlarged in fairly recent times also.
