Exterior Description And Setting

Site of former Upper, Town or Barbican gate lodge, built in 1818 (at the same time as the present Carrowdore Castle) and demolished in 1992, with modern gate screen a short distance to the W. The 1994 UAHS The Gate Lodges of Ulster- A Gazetteer described this building as a ‘delightful folly entrance sited as a focus at the end of Main Street...symmetrical Romantic in similar materials to the lower lodge [random rubble basalt with red brick dressings to openings] Here the central carriage archway had double segmental heads which carried a room over with crow-stepped gables front and back. To each corner slender square towers rising two storeys and decorated with more arrowloops. This watchroom, with a Georgian squared sash window back and front, can only be approached by ladder from one of the two ground floor rooms. Each of these in the form of a lean to with their own crow-stepped gables and little square corner turrets’.

The gate lodge formerly on this site was built in 1818 by Nicholas Delacherois Crommelin, at the same time as the building of the present Carrowdore Castle. It was demolished in 1992.
