Exterior Description And Setting

Derelict and dilapidated single storey gabled house situated on a slight rise on the W side of the Abbey Road just S of the small hamlet of Ballyfrenis. The front E facade is largely obscured by rampant greenery. To the left of centre is a timber sheeted door with a now broken fanlight. To the left of this are two window openings with plain surrounds, but both openings are now blocked. To the right of the door is another, now blocked, window opening. Beyond this window the facade is completely obscured by greenery. The N gable has two small attic windows high in the gable, with the remnants of sash frames. The S gable is blank. The rear facade is also partly covered in greenery and has a recent looking lean to projection in the centre with a plain sheeted door to its S facade and a modern window to the W facade. The roof is pitched with Bangor blue slates and three small rendered chimney stacks. Four small cast iron skylights to left of roof at front. Facade mainly finished in rough cast. Remnants of cast iron rw goods. Dilapidated outbuildings to S and W.

Historical Information

A building is shown on this site on the OS Maps of 1833/4 and 1858-60, which probably corresponds with the house we see today. The outbuildings to the south are also present on both maps. Interestingly the 1858-60 map shows a standing stone just to the west of the site, which now appears to be gone. This house appears to have been abandoned some time after 1973.
