Exterior Description And Setting

Two storey gabled house of c.1840, built on to a much earlier single storey dwelling, all set at the end of a short lane on the W side of the Ballycastle Road, c.2 miles W of Carrowdore. Front SE facade has central timber panelled door with semicircular ‘radial’ fanlight, all encased with sandstone ‘Ards’ surround. To the left of the doorway is a PVC window, with simulated ‘Georgian’ panes and made to resemble original sash window. Similar window to left with three similar (but smaller) evenly spaced windows to the first floor. The front facade is unrendered, showing rubble construction. The windows have smooth render surrounds and there are rendered, chamfered quoins. The NE gable is finished in rough cast render with plain quoins and has a PVC window to the left on the first floor. The SW gable is similar but has a PVC window (as front) to the left on the ground floor also. Attached to the rear of the main house is a long single storey ‘return’. This section is in fact the original house, however its exterior has been somewhat ‘modernised’ with a modern brick porch added and several windows enlarged and sporting modern frames. To the centre of the first floor of the main house (directly above the roof of the ‘return’) is a small four pane timber window. The roof of the main house and the ‘return’ are pitched, with Bangor blue slates to the main house and concrete tiles to the ‘return’. There are two gable yellow brick chimney stacks to the main house, and two recent red brick stacks to the ‘return’. The ‘return’ is largely finished in rough cast. Cast iron and PVC rw goods. What is now the ‘return’ is the oldest section of this property and it and the outbuildings are shown on the OS Map of 1833/4. The owner believes this section to be eighteenth century. By the time of the revised Map (c.1858-60), the site of the main two storey house had been built on, thus dating this section to some time between c.1834 and c.1858, perhaps the 1840s. Evaluation

Two storey (former) farm house of c.1840s, built on to one end of a much earlier single storey building, which itself now forms a return. The two storey section is largely intact, but now has PVC windows, whilst the older single storey section has been modernised but original interior detailing remains.
