Exterior Description And Setting

Large-ish two storey formal house, built in 1906, situated on the W side of the Ballywalter Road in the S edge of Millisle. Front E facade has central timber panelled door with segmental arch headed fanlight. The doorway is encased with fluted pilasters, ‘arched’ entablature and ‘arched’ cornice. To either side of the doorway are twinned segmental arch headed windows with moulded surrounds, keystones and sash frames. To the first floor are two sets of similar windows, with a single (but similar) window in the centre. The S gable has a window to the centre of the ground floor and one to the left on the first floor, both as front. The N gable has a similar arrangement , but with the first floor window to the left. The rear has two sash windows (without surrounds etc.) to the first floor and two to the ground floor. In the centre of the rear is a two storey gabled return, with three sash windows to the S facade of the return and two more, and a glazed door, to the N. Small single storey ‘shed’ attached to right side of return gable. The entire facade is finished in a ‘salt & pepper’ render with, smooth render cill bands, chamfered quoins and plinth. Eaves course. The roofs are pitched with Bangor blue slates with two rendered and corbelled chimney stacks to the main roof. ‘Saw tooth’ clay ridge tiles to main roof. Overhang at main gables, plain barges. Cast iron and PVC rw goods.

Historical Information

According to the owner (who had extensive knowledge of past residents), this house was built in 1906 on land belonging to the then Lord Dunleath. References- Primary sources 1 PRONI D.1167 Dunleath Papers. [Conceivably there may be documents relating to this property within this collection.]
