Exterior Description And Setting

Once picturesque one and a half storey, brick built gabled block consisting of three, formerly estate workers dwellings, built in c.1910. The block is situated on the NW side of the Woburn Road, c.2 miles S of Millisle. Front SE facade has a central doorway with modern partly glazed door (to No.45) with shouldered surround [rendered]. Two windows to either side of doorway, all with modern frames. Gabled dormer directly above doorway, containing slightly smaller window with modern frame. Chamfered quoins to front facade. Paint used to simulate dressings to windows. SW gable has two upper level windows with modern frames. To the ground floor is a lean to extension containing a modern window to SW façade. Modern entrance door to No.47 on SE facade. This gable merges into a large modern two storey flat roofed extension which covers the entire rear of No.47. . Both gable and extension are finished in plain render. NE gable has two upper level windows with modern frames. To the ground floor is a large-ish recently (brick) built gabled extension containing PVC door to No.43. To the rear of No.43 is a large single storey brick built extension, with flat roof and modern windows. The rear of No.45 is completely taken up with a recently constructed two storey gabled extension, also built in brick with modern windows. The main roof of the block has a steep pitch with Bangor blue slates and two centred brick (partly rendered) chimney stacks. Overhang at verge and eaves. Mixture of cast iron and PVC rw goods.

According to the owner of No.43, this block was built in c.1910 as dwellings for workers on the Woburn estate. The OS maps of 1833/4 and 1858-60 show the general site occupied by earlier buildings, no trace of which appears to have survived. One and a half storey block in brick with steep pitched roof, built in c.1910 and containing three estate workers’ dwellings. Originally possessing a somewhat typically Edwardian mildly rustic or picturesque quality, this block now sports large rear extensions and modern window frames.
