Exterior Description And Setting

Recently much extended and renovated single storey gabled house on the E side of the Ballywalter Road less than 2 miles S of Millisle. The front of this house was originally the SW facade (facing the road), but this facade now has three small window openings and one large (modern) one all with PVC frames and modern cills. Until recently this facade had an entrance door and four small windows. Both the SE and NW gables are blank. The rear has been greatly extended in recent times and now sports a lean to section (which runs almost the entire length of the rear of the main house). Out of this lean to projects a long gabled return. The rear sections all have modern looking window openings with PVC frames. The house is entered on the left side of the SE facade of the return via a modern glazed door with large sidelight. The entire facade is finished in rough cast render. The roof of the original house is pitched and it and part of the lean to roof are covered in Bangor blue slates. The roof of the return has asbestos free slates. The roof of the original house has a single rendered chimney stack. PVC rw goods. The original section of this house is probably quite old (at least early nineteenth century) and until recently maintained some semblance of its original look. However, the front facade has now been radically altered and the rear greatly extended, with the overall result that this dwelling is now bland and uninteresting.

A building is shown on this site on the OS Maps of 1833/4 and 1858-60, which probably corresponds to the original (SW) section of the present dwelling. The changes to the former front facade and the extensions to the return to the rear are all post 1973.
