Exterior Description And Setting

A small single-storey gabled and slated house of rectangular plan with an attic, originally built as a school. Chimney on west gable. Modernised, with walls cement rendered Tyrolean style, painted white but up to eaves level only on the gables; PVC rainwater goods; modern flush roof lights to rear; concrete cills. North facing entrance front has a modern rectangular panelled door flanked by a rectangular window to each side. Inscription plaque on front wall. Grassed area in front of house, with a front boundary wall of concrete blockwork. Setting: the building stands on a bend in the road in a rural location, viewed against a background of mature trees.

Built by local subscription in 1810. Plaque on front wall is inscribed “Kilwaughter Female National School 1810”. Appears on OS map of 1832. References - Primary Sources 1. Evaluation

This is a late Georgian building of modest scale and very plain style whose main interest depends on its inscription plaque which proclaims its original function as a school, but whose original architecture has been changed by inappropriate alterations.
