Exterior Description And Setting

A two-storey gabled building of snecked basalt in rough courses, with a terrace of single-storey cottages attached to its north gable, all now in derelict condition. Rectangular doorways and window openings to front facade of mill block, set in flat arches; some openings roughly blocked up with timber, others lying open. Roof in ruinous state. Upper storey reached by ramped approach to north gable. Large rectangular opening to north gable with small circular stone dressed opening in apex. Style of openings comparable with those of farm buildings at Kilwaughter Castle. Setting: the building stands on a bend in the road in a very rural area, with a mill pond lying to its rear.

Historical Information

Built c 1820s, according to OS Memoirs of 1835, when it was described as “2-storeys high and slated, and measures 28 by 23 feet outside ... The machinery is propelled by a breast wheel 15 and a half feet in diameter by 4 feet 3 inches bucket, all of iron except the arms which are of wood ... It is in very good repair.
