Exterior Description And Setting

A segmental arched bridge carrying the main road over a tunnel access linking the former limestone quarry at Magheramorne with the quays to the north. Built of snecked basalt with shaped sandstone voussoirs to the arches; basalt rubble copings to parapet and similar raking copings to the splayed abutments. Later concrete strengthening at base of abutments within tunnel in form of blind arcading, probably to protect masonry from vehicular traffic. Setting: the arched tunnel is situated in a rural location within a former limestone quarry, later a cement works; entrances much overgrown, and position of arches and parapets not easily identifiable at carriageway level above due to overgrowth of road verges. Appearance of archway spoiled by its use as a conduit for overhead industrial pipes.
