Exterior Description And Setting

A modern school of asymmetrical layout built of aluminium prefabricated units, with flange-like supports to the roof along one side, together with a red brick block. Roofs covered with felt. Setting: The building stands on the edge of the village, in a rural location, close to the main road and visible from it.

Built in 1953; opened on 5th November 1953. This was the 28th school in Northern Ireland built using the system of aluminium prefabricated units developed by the Bristol Aeroplane Company and manufactured by the Shorts company in Belfast.

Evaluation

This is an example of a modern post-war school building using prefabricated aluminium units of a type which was of some innovatory interest at the time, but in this case it was neither a pioneering example nor does it still stand in its original condition.
