Exterior Description And Setting

These bridges have been demolished leaving only the abutments absorbed in the retaining walls that line the main road, although there still remains an associated arch leading northwards off the main road just to the east. EHS First Survey record dated 26th May 1970 'Twin bridges with single elliptical arches over the main road. The construction is of snecked blackstone with rusticated vouissoirs. Parapets are surmounted by rough stone copings.'

Historical Information

Built in connection with the Magheramorne Lime-Works. Appears on OS map of 1857, but not on map of 1832. Possibly they were the bridges described in 1840 as “2 handsome viaducts crossing the road along the quays and connecting the quarries with enormous mounds formed of the debris of limestone and of the earth stripped from the surface. One of these crosses the road by a beautiful elliptic arch 15 feet in span and 22 feet high. The second is 16 feet high and 10 feet in span. They are neatly though plainly constructed of dressed limestone”; but they may have been later replacements for them, possibly built c 1853 when the new road from Carrickfergus to Larne was laid out by Charles Lanyon, architect and engineer and County Surveyor at the time.
