Exterior Description And Setting

Pair of storey and a half semi-detached houses in a simple Arts and Crafts style set back from Irish Green Street behind a six metre long garden and block wall. Each half similarly maintained giving the impression of a single house. The houses are symmetrical about their junction which is marked by a downpipe. They are harled and white washed with a steeply sloping manmade slate roof. A tall chimney on the ridge near the centre point of each house is white washed and has four small pots. Below, is a two and a half metre long dormer with lean-to roof. Its base is on the eaves line of the centre part of the joint facade. The half of the roof to each house orojects over the gable one metre. Over the door it extends further as a rain shelter. Windows and doors are in timber and stained. To each gable is a square high level window, a similar window directly below, and a side door. To the rear a dormer similar to the front lights the attic storey, its base aligning with the eaves. Below, each house has two square windows symmetrical about chimney and dormer and near the gable a smaller window of higher cill height. The pair face west towards Irish Green Street. Behind, a long linear garden extends 20 metres.

Historical Information

Built by Holmes Builders in 1925 for the Irish Sailors and Soldiers Land Trust, to a standard plan. A similar group of cottages survives in Myroe Ward but has been renovated. The present owner's father was the original occupant of this house in 1925. These houses were often sold by the Trust after the death of the original occupant. Reference: Owner (1997)

Evaluation

A well preserved example of the sort of accommodation (‘homes for heroes’) built for ex-service personnel in the inter war years. Nicely detailed and economically planned they are typified by extremely large garden plots.
