Exterior Description And Setting

Much extended long two storey gabled house situated, just off the Loughries Road roughly 2 miles E of Newtownards. This house has been extensively extended in fairly recent times. The original section of the house is to the S. Its front E facing facade has a right of centre doorway with timber panelled door, plain pilasters and cornice hood on curved brackets. To the left of this are two windows with moulded architraves and keystone and modern two pane frames. To the right of the doorway is a similar window. To the first floor are four windows with similar frames and surrounds but with segmental arch heads to openings. The S gable is blank but merges with the S facade of a full height flat roofed extension which has a large modern first floor window and ground floor doorway with modern glazed double doors. This extension takes up most of the rear of the original house and has more large modern windows to its W and N sides. Placed between the intersection of the N side of the extension and the rear of the original house is a ‘hipped’ roof timber conservatory. Attached to the N gable of the original house is a slightly shorter two storey gabled extension (? a converted barn) with two gabled half dormers to its N facade with two modern windows to the ground floor. The N gable of the extension has an upper level doorway (with plain sheeted timber door) reached via steps. There is a small single pane window to the right on the first floor of the gable. The rear of the extension has two ground floor doorways, with a modern window adjoining the door to the right. The entire facade is finished in dry dash with moulded quoins and plinth. Historical Information

A building is shown on the site of the original section of this house on the OS Maps of 1834 and c.1860, but the arch headed windows, doorway decoration and yellow brick chimneys suggest that this house was either rebuilt or substantially renovated in the late nineteenth century. The gabled extension to the north looks as though it may originally have been a barn.
