Exterior Description And Setting

Two storey six bay former mill building similar to that described as HB02/08/033A. Corrugated asbestos cement roof with cast iron rainwater goods. North wall rubble stone rising to eaves level at corners. Five brick piers equally spaced at first floor level. Space between partly bricked in though there are five window openings. West gable adjacent river in stone with bricked up door. Six opening centrally at first floor and smaller opening in apex above. Remains of steel supports for external mill wheel at base of wall though trough has been filled in to provide route for country park path. South wall similar construction to north with more brick repairs. Two louvred openings and large door with exterior sliding rail.

Historical Information

Building indicated on 1830 Ordnance Survey Map. Part of a group of buildings described by the Ordnance Survey Memoirs of the 1830s as having formed part of a bleach mill before conversion to a flax mill circa 1830. (See HB02/08/033A for full transcription of these comments). By 1848 the building was indicated on Ordnance Survey Maps as corn mill. Another pre 1830 building to the north (now demolished) was described as a corn kiln. The mill seems to have operated as such into the early years of this century. References: OSS 1831,1848. Evaluation

Substantially existent pre 1830 mill building with an unusual structure similar to HB02/08/033A. Alterations have not made this building quite as picturesque, but it is of interest as a piece of industrial archaeology and as a historical remnant as a once very important local industry. Its adaptation, from bleach mill, to flax mill, to corn mill, is also of note.
