Exterior Description And Setting

Right unit of a terrace of three similar, three storey two bay houses on west side of Canal Street. Pitched natural roof has a cement rendered concrete copped chimney with five pots to right gable and slated verge. Semicircular metal rainwater goods with no downpipe (flows to adjacent properties). East elevation is painted lined render with corbelled masonry eaves. Right bay is double width of left. Main entrance is to ground floor left and consists of a modern six panelled stained timber door with narrow obscured glass over-light. On wall to right of door at ground level is a small boot scraper niche. All windows to facade are painted timber 2/2 sliding sashes (vertically divided) and painted granite cills. There are two to ground floor right and three equally spaced to each upper floor. Those to second floor are diminished in height and all are in line with ground floor openings. Those to ground floor have remains of security bars attached to their reveals. South (left) gable forms party wall with adjacent property (no.48).North (right) gable is abutted by a lower building (no.52) and exposed section is cement rendered. Rear (west) elevation is cement rendered and abutted to left by a single storey kitchen extension. Remaining wall to ground floor has a modern timber and glass door. All windows to rear are 1/1 top-hung painted timber casements. Between ground and first floor, over door is a single window. There is another above between first and second floor. Single window to first floor left and one above to second floor. Extension has an artificial slate roof, cement rendered walls and modern windows. Yard to rear has some small outhouses and leads to small garden.

Four houses are shown here on the 1835 OS map, but these had been cleared by 1861. The present terrace of three houses is first noted in the 1874 valuation revision book.
