Exterior Description And Setting

Two storey (+ attic), single bay urban vernacular house, right of a terrace of four on west side of Canal Street. Steeply pitched natural slate roof, cement copped to right, with rendered chimney to left (on party wall shared with no.24). Cast iron skylight to rear pitch and slates are cemented together. Semicircular rainwater goods (flowing to adjoining property). Facade wall is painted lined render with corbelled eaves course. Door to ground floor right and window to left (no cill). To first floor left is a single window with painted rendered cill. All three openings are boarded up. Left gable forms party wall with adjoining property (no.24). Right gable is painted wet-dashed. Rear not accessed Previous HMBB survey slide shows ground floor door to be three panelled with glazed pane to top. Ground floor window is 12/4 sliding sash without horns, and window to first floor is an exposed box 6/6 sliding sash. It is believed that internal access was gained at that time (RO).

Historical Information

Shown in 1835 OS map, and described as a thatched building 12ft6in x 24ft6in x 14ft6in in 1838 valuation. Dimension broadly similar in 1863 valuation. The existing building is undoubtedly that described in these valuations. Precisely when the thatch was replaced with slates is uncertain; the roof framing was replaced in sawn timber, but retained its original pitch. Sources: 1. PRONI – VAL 1D/3/8E (1835 map); 2.
