Exterior Description And Setting

Two storey (+ attic), single bay urban vernacular shop, second of four in a terrace on west side of Canal Street. Steep natural slate roof with broad rendered chimney to left (shared with no.20). Cast iron skylight to front pitch and semicircular metal rainwater goods (flow into to adjacent properties). Front wall is painted lined render with corbelled eaves. Shop front to ground floor; to right side is a t+g sheeted door with a very narrow four paned mouth organ glazed transom; and to left and is boarded up shop window. Window has a painted granite cill, which continues into wall and stops at door. To either side of door and to left of window are narrow panelled timber pilasters which support a plain timber fascia (with leaded drip mould to head). At first floor is a 6 X 6 Yorkshire (horizontal) sliding sash window with painted two piece granite cill. Left (no.20) and right (no.24) gables form party walls with adjacent properties. No access gained to rear.

Historical Information

Shown in 1835 map, and described as a thatched building 17ft6in x 24ft6in x 14ft6in in 1838 valuation. Dimension broadly similar in 1863 valuation. The existing building is undoubtedly that described in these valuations. Precisely when the thatch was replaced with slates is uncertain; the roof framing was replaced in sawn timber, but retained its original pitch. Sources: 1. PRONI – VAL 1D/3/8E (1835 map); 2.
