Exterior Description And Setting

Section of the ground floor of a two storey semi-detached house, used as a post office. Part of a 'terrace' of three two storey gabled properties at the N end of Main Street in the town of Kircubbin. To the front (E) façade there is a glazed shop door in the centre flanked by two large six pane modern shop windows. There is a PVC post office sign over the door and windows, with an internally illuminated projecting PVC sign to left. (No.9 (HB24/02/001A)has a ‘flying lease’ over this property.) The façade is finished in limestone chip render. Modern style pillar box to the left of No.11.

Historical Information

A terrace is shown on this site on the OS Map of 1834, complete with the post office at ‘No.11’ where (assuming the terrace is as original as it appears) it remains to this day. A photograph dating from c.1910 (from the Green Collection) shows these buildings much as present, with the same sized door and window openings, however, the door of No.13 was at that stage encased with pilasters and a lintel and cornice, all of which has recently been removed.
