Exterior Description And Setting

Two storey terraced house and shop at the N end of Main Street in the village of Kircubbin. Front SW elevation has modern glazed door with adjoining fixed light shop window to right (shop is No.28). Large PVC internally illuminated sign above shop front and similar (but much smaller) projecting sign to left at first floor. No.30 ground floor has modern two pane timber window to left, timber panelled door with plain narrow fanlight in ‘centre’ and segmental arch head coach opening to right, with timber double door. First floor (which belongs entirely to No.30), has four windows as ground floor No.30. Entire facade finished in limestone chip render, with crude ‘home made’ window boxes to house cills. Roof pitched with asbestos-free slates and three lined rendered chimney stacks. Cast iron gutters and down spouts. Large full height flat roofed return/extension at rear No.30, long single storey ‘lean to’ extension to rear of No.28, all with modern windows.

Historical Information

This section of terrace may be early nineteenth century (or slightly earlier) in origin as buildings are shown on this site on the 1834 OS Map, however, in the absence of concrete sources it is difficult to be certain. Photographic evidence shows that No.28 has been a shop since at least c.1910, and that all the window and door openings to the front were the same then as now.
