Exterior Description And Setting

Terrace of recently ‘modernised’ two storey gabled single fronted dwellings and shops on the south side of Main Street within the village of Kircubbin. All of these buildings have been greatly altered during recent times, with window openings enlarged and modern windows installed in all properties. Nos.79 and 83 converted to shops, roofs recovered in either asbestos, asbestos-free or concrete slates, modern doors installed to Nos.73-87, and some houses rendered with limestone chips. At the rear, large returns/extensions have been added, most with flat roofs, PVC gutters and down spouts have been installed in places and all chimney stacks appear to have been reconstructed.

Historical Information

Buildings are shown on this site on the OS Map of 1834, however, recent alteration to the terrace as a whole and lack of documentary evidence, makes it difficult to ascertain a date of construction. The curved corner to the house at the south end of the terrace (No.91) may suggest that this property, at least, may have been built/rebuilt in the early twentieth century. Conceivably sections of the terrace may have been rebuilt at various stages, and the dwellings shown on the 1834 map may have now been replaced entirely.
