Exterior Description And Setting

One and a half storey house built as the Methodist Manse, set within tree lined grounds in the centre of the tiny village of Glastry. Front (NW) facade has timber panelled door with plain fanlight set in chamfered reveal with two steps. Two pane aluminium window to left of door with similar window to right. Similar (but slightly smaller) window at upper level directly above door set in large gabled ‘half dormer’ with decorative barges and finial. Cill course and chamfered plinth to front and gables. NE gable has window to right on ground floor as front with large modern three pane aluminium window to left. Two windows to upper level as front. SW gable has two windows to ground floor as ground floor front and two to upper level as upper level front. SE rear has later full height gabled return with timber glazed back door and assortment of aluminium windows. Entire facade of house finished in lined render and painted. Roofs gabled and pitched with decorative barges and finials to gables, and overhang at eaves. Bangor blue slates. Two yellow brick chimney stacks with dentilled corbelling near centre of roof of main house. PVC gutters and down spouts. Small rubble built out houses to rear.

Historical Information

This manse was built in the late 1870s with the return added during the early to mid twentieth century. The interior was partly damaged by fire in 1982, but many original features survived and the house was largely restored.

Evaluation

Relatively plain one one and a half storey manse of the 1870s, with gabled half dormer to front and early 20th century rear return. The building now has modern window frames throughout and an enlarged opening to the NE gable. The interior layout has altered slightly with the addition of the return, and some original detailing remains.
