Exterior Description And Setting

Two storey gabled house of the 1850s with decorated doorway, chamfered quoins and later extension to rear, set on the Manse Road, beside the Presbyterian Church, in the tiny village of Glastry. Front SE facade has central timber glazed door set between two free standing ionic columns which support a cornice lintel with a recessed elliptical ‘radial’ fanlight above. Door, columns, fanlight etc. all set within simple elliptical arch head archivolt. PVC window to left of doorway set within slightly chamfered architrave with decorated surround. Window frame itself is made to simulate ‘Georgian’ sliding sash and case with horizontal and vertical ‘astragals’ between double glazing. Window to right of doorway as before, with three similar, but slightly smaller, evenly spaced windows to first floor. NE gable of main house blank. Rear has large full height hipped roof return/extension to right, which along with rear of original building has combination of PVC windows. Generally similar to windows at front but of varying size and shape. Small lean to extension attached to rear of main extension. SW facade of main house merges with rear extension and has full height three sided hipped roof bay to left with PVC windows to each side on both levels. To right on wall of original house is PVC window to ground and first floor, with both these and windows to bay generally similar to front but of varying sizes and with varying amount of ‘astragals’. Facade finished in lined render with plain render to rear. All roofs have Bangor blue slates and red clay ridge tiles, with two red brick chimney stacks to gables of main house and one to roof of extension. PVC gutters and down spouts.

This manse was built 1857-9 and is shown on OS Map of 1860 set behind some now demolished cottages on the side of the Manse Road. The decoration to the windows may be late nineteenth or early twentieth century. The extension was added c.1920 and the PVC windows installed c.1992. Evaluation

Two storey manse house of the 1850s with Georgian appearance. The rear return was added in the 1920s and the PVC window frames were installed c.1992. The interior has lost much original detailing.
