Exterior Description And Setting

Three bay symmetrical mid-victorian house with L-shaped servants return forming one side of a stableyard. Quoins and 2 flat roofed canted bays to front. Double corbled brackets supporting cast iron rain water goods. Conservatory/greenhouse demolished, - line visible on side wall. Original sash windows and slate roof. Roof of main building hipped with 2 bricked chimneys. Dominant impression of building is of a georgian house with 2 bay windows stuck on. Victorian plasterwork around original front door. Two storey stables to rear used as such until recently. Sheds with metal roofs also in courtyard. Arched opening through wall completes enclosure. Wall finished in painted harling render with smooth plaster detailing around bays quoins and entrance. Wooded surround to buildings on all 4 sides.

Historical Information

Present owner relates that house was built in 1860 by Brook of Brookhill for his mistress. Sold to Presbyterian Church in 1870 and described as a manse on 1909 Ordnance Survey map. House is called Strathmore from 1924 O S map onwards. The late Mr Harry Bond, auctioneer and valuer, and his family lived in the house from the 1960s until a year ago. The building was the manse of Glendermott 1st Presbyterian Church

Evaluation

Mid victorian suburban merchants house. Good example of the type and well preserved. It is not of sufficient merit to warrant listing purely on its own qualities. (See Brookmount House HB01/08/011 for a house of similar plan but more ornate detailing. The two houses are adjacent to each other.)
