Exterior Description And Setting

A 2 storey slated and smooth rendered Edwardian house.The main facade facing the Broighter Road is 5 bays wide, 2 of which project forward and in the angle is a square porch with hip and slated roof. On the return northern facade the house is 3 bays deep with ground floor bay window and a 2 storey return with lower roof continuous for another 2 bays. The rendering is divided horizontally with plaster plinth and bands are lined through with the first floor windows. The windows in the main part of the house are wooden sliding sashes divided in 3 and in each case the top section is filled with decorative leaded glass. The crenellated ridge tiles are intact as are the dominant red brick chimneys. The eye catching aspect of the house is 3 highly decorative barges in timber, painted white and looking distinctly arts and crafts. On the main facade the roof is slightly raised over 2 windows while the first floor landing is lit with a tripartite window. The house is well maintained, the decorative south gable was renewed in its entirety recently. The windows to the return have been replaced with PVC units.

Historical Information

The house probably replaced a single storey farm cottage and remains of an early 19th century outhouse which can be seen on the 1831 O S map still exists to the rear. The present house was built by the Reverend William Kane, who was Presbyterian minister in Dunfanaghy from 1869 to 1905 and during his time there had built the Presbyterian church designed by architects Young & Mackensie. The Reverend Kane expressed his views as to the style of the church. He inherited the property at Broglasco and had built Broglesco house for his retirement and that of 3 single sisters. The drawings of the house are dated 14 March 1902. Reverend Kane did not long enjoy his retirement home as he died in 1905.

An example of the Arts & Crafts style as locally expressed. Merits recording but having been built as recently as 1905 would not be a good enough example of the style to merit listing.
