Exterior Description And Setting

Former two storey, nine bay Georgian house with curving end bays situated at the top of the entrance road into Limavady from the Roe Bridge closing the vista. Building demolished and replaced by war memorial courtyard (see HB02/12/035). Described in the first survey in 1970 as 'Pre 1830. A two-storey house with lined rendered walls and a slated roof. The façade with centre bay, five windows wide is terminated either end by a two window segmental bay. All D/H windows have full astragals. The entrance is approached by a flight of steps containing a panelled door recessed in a square moulded architrave flanked by unfluted Doric columns with two tiers of architrave blocks and a moulded eliptical pediment. The interior has been altered and extensions have been added.'

Historical Information

Originally residence of the Boyle family, the building was bought in 1921 by public subscription as a war memorial. It was blown up in 1974 and demolished shortly afterwards. It is called ‘Bridge Hill’ on the Ordnance Survey map of 1895. The projecting bay to the north west was added between the 1830 and 1848 Ordnance Surveys. The reputed date of construction was 1735.
