Exterior Description And Setting

Polished granite war memorial of four stepping plinths topped by an undecorated Celtic cross. Bottom plinth 440mm approximately high, unadorned. Second plinth 1.5 metres high with a garland wreath to front (north elevation) picked out in gold paint. West elevation lists the names of those who fell in 1939-45. East elevation has a longer list of names of those killed 1914-18. Third plinth 200mm high: ‘We will remember them’. Fourth plinth 400mm high ‘The fallen of Limavady District; 1914-18, 1939-45’. The memorial surrounded by a wreath stand sits in a courtyard of pink brick paviours on the site of the former War Memorial Building. (HB02/12/036). There is a flagpole to the north west. The court is surrounded at the road on two sides by a small rendered wall and railings.

Post World War I war memorial originally located on Catherine Street at the north west end of the present site. Moved to the present location during late 1970s following demolition of War Memorial Building (HB02/12/036) in 1974. References: Girvan D, U A H S The Buildings of North Derry 1975 p12

Evaluation

A poor quality war memorial with inscriptions that are hard to read due to their size and the polish of the surrounding granite. As presently located the Memorial and surrounding court detract from the entrance to Limavady. As Girvan stated in 1974 a determined effort must be made to close the gap here, a low wall would hardly be sufficient and a new building of much the same proportions as the old should be considered the best solution’.
