Exterior Description And Setting

Two storey three bay brick building at the northern end of Largy Bridge (HB02/03/009). It has a natural slate roof, cast iron rainwater goods and central bay double flush door. Above there is 600mm of board marked concrete and slatted door to eaves level at first floor. Flanking the door at ground level there are two four pane sash windows with timber shutters and segmental brick relieving arches over. At first floor aligning with these there are two openings of different size closed by slatted timber. A pulley sits out from the roof over the central bay. To the east are two square openings at first floor closed by timber. To the rear there are three similar sized openings abutting the eaves closed by slatted timber. A centrally placed flush double door opens onto a timber staircase. To the east side there is a small window with timber shutter, to the west marks of a larger opening are blocked up. Under the central door is a similar double door into a basement. The west gable has two blocked up openings. Behind the building is a stone lined elliptical recess once used as a tannery.

Historical Information

Indicated on Ordnance Survey Map of 1831 and part of the complex described by the Ordnance Survey Memoirs as: “Bleach Mill in Deer Park belongs to James Alexander Esquire. There are two water wheels attached to this mill… The water is conveyed from the western (southern) side of the Roe to this mill by a wooden aqueduct. The houses attached to the green are as follows: viz the engine house, the rub board house, the boiling house, two drying lofts, two store houses, a broughan house and the carpenters workshop, all in good repair.” This was probably always a store house as the main mill was located a short distance to the north west. It is now known as the corn house. It was renovated by the Department of the Environment in the mid 1980s. A simple well maintained structure which compliments the setting of Largy Bridge and which is of local historical interest for its association with the industrial usage of the River Roe.However does not merit listing.
