Exterior Description And Setting

Single-storey/ two-bay house facing south-west. Slated roof with rendered stepped chimney on right gable. Rainwater goods incomplete. Whitewashed and dashed random rubble walls with projecting eaves course. Main elevation has gabled porch at left end; main door on right cheek of porch. Narrow rectangular margin-paned casement window on porch gable. Sliding sash window centre right front elevation. Extension on right gable, with sliding sash windows on gable. All cills are of roughly dressed granite. Rear elevation has door to right and double margin-paned window to left. This is one of two Coastguard houses at this location; that to the west has been modernised and is now of little architectural interest.

Historical Information

Although a building is marked at this location on the 1834 OS 6" map (Down sheet 56), it is not cited as having a Coastguard-related association in the 1834 Valuation book. A Coastguard station is explicitly cited on the 1859 and 1901 maps, and it was undoubtedly erected sometime during the mid-19th century to replace a nearby watch house (see below). A short distance south, near the shoreline, was a Waterguard station. It is cited as such on the 1834 map and as a watch house on the 1859 and 1901 maps. According to Mayne, it was erected in 1827. It has been modernised and bears little resemblance to the original. Both premises appear to have been relinquished by the authorities c.1904 Primary sources: 1. PRONI - OS 6/3/56/1(1834 OS map). 2. Mid-19th century Coastguard house in a vernacular style which predates the more formalised Board of Works designs of later years. This building is of social interest to the local community but not of special architectural or historic interest.
