Exterior Description And Setting


A dressed granite post on west side of road. Measures 28cm (11in) square/ 90cm (35in) high, and finished with a pyramidal top. Inscribed on its three road faces with 15cm (6in) high number ‘17’ (the distance in Irish miles from Newry).

Historical Information


Although first depicted on the 1919 OS 6" map, the fact that the measurement is in Irish miles suggests that it is probably of early 19th century date. Primary Sources: 1. PRONI 1919 OS map (Down sheet 56).
